The MH SUD Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (RRTP) Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for for providing and leading competent, evidence-based care to assigned patients. They will assist in directing the provision of nursing education, orientation, competencies and providing quality improvement and outcomes utilization consultation. This position is open ONLY to current, permanent employees of the Hershel "Woody" Williams VA Medical Center.
The MH SUD RRTP RN provides patient-centered, recovery-oriented nursing care to individuals with mental health and substance use disorders. The role includes direct clinical care, assessments, group facilitation, collaboration with interdisciplinary teams, safety monitoring, documentation, and maintaining professional standards. The RN supports both patients and colleagues while contributing to a safe therapeutic environment.
Duties to include but not limited to: Provide direct patient care related to MH/SUD needs. Conduct acute and routine psychiatric assessments and interventions. Assist staff in developing recovery-based plans of care.
Facilitate nurse-led psychoeducational groups. Use therapeutic communication and de-escalation techniques. Apply recovery-oriented language during patient interactions.
Oversee patient safe medication management processes. Participate in shift reports, warm hand-offs, interdisciplinary team meetings, and environment of care rounds. Identify and report psychiatric and medical care needs and emergencies. Identify and remove safety hazards to maintain a therapeutic environment. Document nursing assessments, risk screens, plans of care, safety rounds, and environment rounds per facility policy.
Collaborate with SUD specialists, psychiatric providers, and other clinical staff. Use evidence-based practice to assess needs, develop care plans, monitor status, and support transitional care. Advocate for patients and maintain professional boundaries. Support colleagues through knowledge sharing and fostering a professional environment.
Question clinical practices when appropriate to promote evidence-based care. Maintain flexibility in schedule and assignments as needed. Perform physical tasks typical for nursing care (walking, standing, lifting, bending, kneeling).
