Job description

This position is in the Department of Veterans Affairs, Chillicothe VA Medical Center. The position is in the Construction & Maintenance (C&M) Shop, Facilities Management Service (FMS) and works under the direct supervision of the C&M Supervisor. The primary purpose of the position involves carpentry work in support of construction, maintenance, repair, installation, troubleshooting, testing, and inspecting of real and personal property.

Duties include but are not limited to: Performs duties of maintenance which involves maintaining, repairing, installing, troubleshooting, testing, and inspecting of real and personal property in trades such as electrical, plumbing, painting, and carpentry Performs maintenance, repairs, and inspections on carpentry items such as ceiling tiles, ward furniture, office furniture, walls, floors, trim, windows, handrails, cubical tracks, and curtain rods. Adjust doors, door closers, hardware and stops. Fine cabinet making, as well as full blown building build outs (metal studs, sheetrock, mudding, painting, ceiling grid, and tile work).

Performs maintenance, repairs, and inspections on plumbing systems such as sinks, water closets, drinking fountains, hot water storage, hot and cold-water lines, copper, brass and iron, sanitary sewers, vents, and storm sewers. Performs maintenance, repairs, and inspections on mechanical devices such as door openers, bearings, wheels, casters, seals, shafts, gears, pulleys, chains, and belts. Performs a wide range of tests/checks related to equipment operation as outlined by JCAHO, OSHA, NEC, HAP, CAP, VA, and other pertinent standards, policies, and codes.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Position Description Title/PD#: Maintenance Worker/PD93633-A Physical Requirements: Required to work from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms.

Work requires standing, reaching, bending, climbing, and stooping as the work site dictates. May work above ground level and in manholes. Lifts, carries, and sets up tools, equipment, and parts necessary to do the job.

Performs work in cramped areas, on temporary platforms and above head. Generally, lifts and carry items up to 90 pounds. Working Conditions - Work is performed both inside and outside in all kinds of weather.

Work area may be cramped, dirty, noisy, dusty, etc. Exposure to possible electric shocks, burns, cuts, bruises, and strains is generally applicable. Exposed to eye, skin, nose, and lung irritations from glue, bonding chemicals, vapors, splinters, and sawdust. Exposed to the possibility of cuts and serious injuries while operating woodworking machines.

Must wear safety devices such as respirators, protective ear and eye devices/mask, which may be uncomfortable if worn for long periods when required. Chillicothe VA Medical Center provides primary care and specialty health services, including mental health services, spinal cord injury treatment, women's health care, nutrition counseling, social work, and more. The medical center operates multiple VA community clinics located in Athens, Cambridge, Lancaster, Marietta, Portsmouth, and Wilmington. Chillicothe VAMC is a teaching hospital offering clinical rotations in medical, dental, and mental health specialties to 200+ health profession trainees at all levels per year.
