Job description

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

Functions or Scope of Assigned Duties The Critical Care Registered Nurse (RN)-SCU is responsible for providing competent, evidence-based care to assigned patients and oversight of licensed vocational nurses/nursing assistants, as appropriate to the setting. The Critical Care Registered Nurse (RN)-SCU will assist in directing the provision of nursing education, orientation, competencies and providing quality improvement and outcomes utilization consultation. The Critical Care Registered Nurse (RN)-SCU demonstrates leadership in delivering and improving holistic care through collaborative strategies with others. The Critical Care Registered Nurse (RN)-SCU provides direct care for acutely/critically ill patients who are at high risk for actual or potential life-threatening health problems, regardless of the setting for nursing care. The Critical Care Registered Nurse (RN)-SCU provides high intensity care and vigilance, while refining assessment skills and blending in data obtained from a variety of invasive/noninvasive monitoring technology.

The Critical Care Registered Nurse (RN)-SCU evaluates practice in an ongoing process, based on best evidence. Provides peers with informal constructive feedback for improvement. The Critical Care Registered Nurse (RN)-SCU fosters a safe and supportive environment conducive to the professional development of healthcare professionals. The Critical Care Registered Nurse (RN)-SCU contributes professional nursing perspective in discussions with the interdisciplinary team. Partners with others to effect change and produce optimal outcomes.

The Critical Care Registered Nurse (RN)-SCU supports colleagues through knowledge sharing to provide safe, quality nursing care. Shares educational findings, experiences, and ideas with peers. The Critical Care Registered Nurse (RN)-SCU questions clinical practices for the purpose of providing evidence-based care. Participates in activities and strategies to sustain an evidence-based-practice culture. The Critical Care Registered Nurse (RN)-SCU has experience with the situations in which they are ultimately expected to perform, integrating theoretical concepts, strong critical thinking skills, and exhibits a robust technically skilled practice.

Supervisory Controls: The incumbent is responsible to the assigned rating and approving supervisors and is accountable to the Associate Director of Patient Care Services (AD PCS). Dimensions of Nursing Practice: Leads professional practice using the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation) to improve evidence-based and/or data-driven outcomes for an identified patient population and/or specialized areas within immediate practice setting. Leadership: Communicates and collaborates as an effective leader of the interprofessional team, at the expert level, with improved evidence-based and/or data-driven outcomes for the immediate practice setting.

Expectations: Customer Services Requirements: The Critical Care RN meets the needs of the Veteran and as appropriate the Veteran's family, caregiver and/or significant other, the Veteran's representative, visitors to VA facilities, all VA staff and other customers while supporting VA missions. The incumbent consistently communicates and treats the Veteran and as appropriate the Veteran's family, caregiver and/or significant other, the Veteran representatives, visitors to VA facilities, all VA staff, and other customers in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner. The incumbent provides the Veteran's family, caregiver and/or significant other, the Veteran's representative, visitors to VA facilities, all VA staff, and other customers with consistent information according to establish policies and procedures. The incumbent handles conflict and problems in dealing with any consumer group appropriately and in a constructive manner.
