Blind Rehabilitation Specialist

The Blind Rehabilitation Specialist provides individualized rehabilitation services to Veterans with visual impairments, supporting their independence, safety, and quality of life. The incumbent conducts assessments, designs training plans, delivers instruction, and collaborates closely with an interdisciplinary rehabilitation team.

Responsibilities: The major duties of this position include, but are not limited to: - Conduct assessments of veterans' backgrounds, interests, goals, motivation, and training needs to support individualized rehabilitation planning. - Evaluate veterans' safety practices and confidence in performing daily living activities and identify areas requiring instruction, modified techniques, or adaptive equipment. - Assess functional abilities and progress in finger dexterity, tactile perception, hand-eye and bi-manual coordination, hand-foot coordination, memory for task sequencing, and development of constructive imagination.

- Utilize, maintain, and troubleshoot assistive technologies including electronic travel aids, computer-assisted devices, speech output/input systems, and Braille technologies to enhance independence. - Identify visual and non-visual barriers contributing to activity limitations, participation restrictions, psychological distress, and loss of vocational or avocational opportunities; recommend appropriate interventions. - Participate in cross-training across additional blind rehabilitation disciplines to support program workload needs and align with veterans' individualized rehabilitation goals. - Serve as team coordinator for assigned veterans, developing, implementing, and monitoring individualized interdisciplinary rehabilitation care plans in collaboration with the veteran and the full rehabilitation team. - Document assessments, training progress, interventions, and care plan updates in accordance with VA policy and regulatory requirements.

- Provide education, training, and support to veterans and caregivers related to adaptive skills, assistive technology, and rehabilitation strategies.
